Idea

Idea

My initial idea was to focus my documentary around pregnancy/parenthood as I have always be interested in the subject. However I realised this was very vague so I developed the idea into comparing how parenthood has changed through generations which is something most people have observed in their life. My research only highlighted that my observation was correct and the topic had many differences to explore.

Documentary Proposal:

Hypothesis:
I believe through the last 50 years parenting has changed and evolved I've noticed the change from my family and the people closest to me. I think there has even been a big change from my childhood and ones children are getting now. With such a drastic difference I'm really interested in how and why this change has occurred. I want my audience to understand that the documentary is a celebration of Motherhood and an over view of how it has changed. My documentary is going to compare differences and similarities whilst getting opinions from Mothers who have raised/raising children through different generations.

Topic:
My documentary's subject is Mothers who have raised children or are raising them I will be exploring more social issues. With my documentary there isn't much that an audience has to know to be able to watch it because it focuses more on social constructs and opinions. Any adult would easily be able to understand however I feel as though the documentary would be more interesting parents because they can probably relate to the issues being discussed. I will only give information concerning the women's parenting status also two of my interviewee's work in education with young children which I will also be talking about. This information will be stated by the interviewees at the start of the interview.

Interviews:
Jade Barrett, Mother of one child, Primary School Teacher, Jade will representing modern parents as she has only been a Mother since August 2019.

Sadie Knowles, Mother of two, Grandmother of three, Preschool Teacher, Sadie will be representing Mothers from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's.

Pauline Drew, Mother of four, Grandmother of eleven, Great Grandmother of eight, Pauline will be representing mothers from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Conflict:
There is no real conflict however I feel as if there will be contrasting opinions from each Mother. However there will be no conflict between anyone in my documentary more of a contrast which means there isn't any confrontation needed. I will edit my documentary to contrast the opinions but also highlight the similarities but each interview will give me different opinions.

Audience Biased:
I think the audience will go into the film expecting the older generation to have harsher views about parenting whereas they will expect the modern parent let their child watch T.V all day and to be overly protective. I only think this because of stereotypes i have of parents however I think that my interviewees will break this stereotype because they are all very different. I'm not planning to alter these stereotypes instead I just want to shine a light on how parenting differs whether this changes people biased's or not.

Structure:
I plan to start my documentary with narration over archival footage which goes from decade to decade whilst the voice of god explains the premise of the story. The footage will highlight how different each era has been whilst the narration will help guide the audience into understanding the documentary.

Then the documentary will focus on my interviewees and their stories of Motherhood giving the audience an understanding of how each generation appears. I will integrate facts I have researched into my interviews first I will see how it looks when I get my interviewee to repeat them back to me. However if this doesn't work I'm going to try using the voice of god to introduce them.

To end my documentary I will use narration over the top of footage of my interviewees interacting with each other. My voice of god will highlight that although each generation is different they are all Mothers trying to give their children the best chance.

Form and style:
My interviews move with theme rather than have all one interview then the next I'm going to edit them to fit each others points. I feel this will really help to show the differences between each interviewee. With my narrative I'm going to go chronologically starting with pregnancy working up because it will then make sense to the audience what's happening. I think my documentary will fit into expository and reflexive because although it's exposing the contrast but I'm allowing my audience to make their own judgements about the parenting techniques. I will be using a narrator but no host my documentary will mainly be drove by  interviews.

Resolution:
I think my film will end with all the Mothers together interacting and chatting with just music playing over the top. To convey this overall message that this film is for Mothers and celebrating how they are different. I want to start the documentary showing how generations have changed and then to end it with how they are the same sums up my overall message. I'm hoping this last scene will leave my audience feeling light-hearted and happy.

Unique qualifications:
I've been lucky enough to have a big family and have always been brought up around younger children which I've found has given me an appreciation for all of the struggles new parents go through. I've often seen my older family members give advice to the new parents and seen how their  beliefs contrast. Also I did work experience in a Preschool where I saw how different the students lives are compared to my childhood. Furthermore the three people my documentary will focus on are my family members who are three generations.

Logistics:
There will be no feasible problem there only problem I might face some difficulties getting enough B roll for cut away's. This is because only one of my interviewees has baby stuff which is ideally what I need for most cut away's.
